the article referenced talks about making a top from a paperclip, not the manufactured top moving a paperclip on the table surface. - the Sakai paperclip top is cool in its own right.

Nice "top" - like those fidget toy competitions, what is the longest spinning (time) finger spun only, top on record?

    Hi Gang:
I have a magnetic top that came with a sheet metal snake. Looks cool as the snake wiggles back and forth.

    Hello Des:
I thought I could put my hands on the snake/top, but alas I couldn't find it.
The snake is just stamped steel with a ridge where the backbone should be. The top has a magnetic tip that it spins on. The top spins in place and the snake moves as the tip of the top pulls the snake by the edge. I'll post a picture and video if I find it.
    Carl.
