so for the totally ignorant (snow and ice is unknown where I live, and the fridge is too small to put a bike in)... can you not ride a normal bike on ice/snow?

You can ride a "normal" bike in snow if it is not too deep and you have knobby tires. A bike on ice is deadly. In a car, with 4 wheels, you slide on ice but do not usually tip over. A bike with normal tires on ice can fall over before you have time to react, skinny tire does not have enough grip to propel you forward.
