Didn't really see the climbing operation, did see it move but not what was holding it in place.

So, thinking as the desk-mechanical engineer, tasked with designing each lifting-section of the wind turbine tower itself; consider the tower, then the weight and moment arm of this new crane-thing we’re going to hang on the side, then the weight of everything we’ll need to lift with it. Oh, and don’t forget to factor in maximal wind effects for each phase and each lift!

Lemme know if you have any questions!

looks like all 4 pins release at once to move to the new location, what holds it then? Wily Coyote delayed falling?

Seems as though there must be something like key-hole pins on the belly

On the central stalk of the gripper crane is another portion that slides up and down that also attaches to the wind tower column. That is what is holding the crane on while the gripper arms are released. Then the whole crane slides up or down.

At 3:38 in the youtube video it shows a close up of this portion.

3:44 shows those "pins" actually penetrating the main column on the control monitor screen. My guess is the 4 outrigger supports AND the central ones would all be engaged while doing any lifting operations. You can see the receiving holes at 0:11. The smaller section on the right shows holes 90 degrees apart around the column pieces so they're on a t least 3 sides of the columns. I'd love to see them bring in, assemble and tip up that climber crane! If it was really a marvel it would walk up, set the first two or three sections from the ground then sit up by itself and draw up to the base pieces and attach. Then when it's done it walks over to the next site and start over!
