There are so many levels of building quality in China. Heck two years ago in England there was a serious devastating high rise fire. There are idiots everywhere. I have worked in a few factories and visited many that were as well built as here in Canada. And i have seen the Tofu stuff as well. Funny name if you haven't paid for it.

Sad thing is even in in the West there is construction quality problems. In Canada just think about the bridges and overpasses in Quebec as an example. So many corners cut and inspections paid off. I have a friend that is a Civil engineer and was working at Darlington Nuclear facility and he started telling me about all the corruption in that build. It is everywhere. Not just in China.

Quebec is insanely corrupt. I used to work for a large construction company which you've definitely heard of, and we had to blacklist every project in the province. The whole province is just too far gone. You have to add +15% - +20% on to everything just to pay off the mafia. $20 million dollar project? Better bring an extra $4 million with you for kickbacks or none of your trucks are getting to site. And the financial penalties are just one part of it. Oh all your tin bashers quit because a bunch of bruisers showed up at their houses and threatened them? You get that a little bit in BC too, but nowhere near as bad as Quebec.

I had no idea about Darlinton. That's interesting. Makes sense though. To install a single bolt on a nuclear project you have to go through 15 layers of red tape. Lots of opportunities for someone expecting a kickback to hold up the process.

So if a company bids a job in good faith and doesn't include all the kickbacks, it makes perfect sense they'll have to cut corners once they realize how much they've underbid the project. I'm not justifying it. But I can at least understand why it happens.

Grenfell tower 2017, horrific fire due to retrofitted flammable over cladding over retrofitted flammable insulation IIRC, other building defects such as PVC-u window frames also contributed, all part of the insulate to improve fuel efficiency drive.

Only dangerous if it is done improperly. PVC window as an example should have additives to be self extinguishing. And cladding for a building can be chosen with the same attributes. The technology is not new. Decades old. It simply takes corporate responsibility. Basically a collective conscience. Getting more rare as money is more important than people.

The PVC window frame didn't so much burn as melt and allow the chimney fire between the outer layer of cladding and the original concrete shell to enter the occupied spaces. Like many of these 'perfect storm' events it was the unforeseen cumulative effects that wrought the most harm.
