Maybe it is his bugout escape plan after the boxes of essentials the kids will be next. Then he will slide down slicing the chute down the middle behind him detach it from the truck slam the doors and DEDE

Most of the buildings that are older in China that I went to did not have elevators. That would be a lot of stairs! I'm all for this idea.

Must be a lot of boxes to move to justify the setup. But if there is no elevator then 5 or 6 might be a lot.

I wonder how hard the guy in the truck had to throw those boxes to get them into the apartment in the first place.

About 40 years ago my brother bought two, two family houses next to each other. The plan was to live in one rent the other two apartments, moving to the newly done one then repeating the process.
When the first house was done, it was time to move into the second house.
Since I was the younger brother I was asked to help move.
Since both houses were three stories, carrying boxes down three flights, then up three flights seemed like a lot of unnecessary work.
I came up with a plan to string a clothesline type of pulley between the two houses.
Thinking back we should have first tried it with something that was expendable, in stead the first thing across was a mantle clock, our first and only casualty!
