    Here's my solution for that problem. I believe it's about the easiest to make and it's worked just fine for me. It's all made from steel and is strong and rigid.

    If you can't make it precise make it adjustable.

    Great design Crusty, however, forces applied parallel to the x-axis tend to cause the part to lift off the machine table (conventional vise has this problem). It is no wonder that inclined shims are placed to make the part move against the machine table. That's also why I prefer to use a milling vise (I've already built and shared one here Precision Vise. Milling Vise. DIY 100% Homemade!) or use some type of clamp that does the same as the mill vise. This fixation model solves this type of problem.
