Wife, kids including new baby, and I drove back from Colorado after visiting my family there about 24 years ago. Going through the pass between Grand Junction and Denver, I was in the left lane, no-passing zone, with bumper to bumper 70mph traffic. In the right lane, just ahead of me about a car length was a 4WD pickup towing a horse trailer. I stomped on the accelerator, and my wife started yelling at me for passing the truck. We heard this weird loud noise, and in our rear-view mirror saw the wheel, brake assembly, and wheel hub go bouncing through the space I'd just vacated. When I suddenly took off, the traffic behind me slowed down, and that thing hit the side of the mountain, and bounced back through the sudden gap in traffic and went off the side of the mountain into the canyon below. And I kept right on going. If I had not stomped on it, that wheel would have gone through the center of my windshield, and taken me, and the baby in the seat behind me, out! And then all that 70mph traffic would have probably killed the rest of the family. Something told me not to be there. There wasn't any noise until it started bouncing behind us. Pretty sure my Guardian Angel was working OT that day.
