I think some older mercedes cars had those. My old 180 mercedes had blinking side lights. So all the new cars that have them just copied the old cars.

Pop's Hillman had those. He drove a Hillman until he went with a SAAB 93.

Early VW Beetles had them.

My Austin AS3 1953 still has them ,but don't use them as they get damaged very quickly with people wanting to pull them out when parked, sacco

Nice little A30, my mothers family firm ran a fleet of A30's and A35's, better than the Morris Minor's they were built to compete with, dad did a neat engine tune job on one that was basically an unguided missile once stirred it's narrow gutted cross-ply tyres lasted really well and had almost zero grip.
Back in the late 1970's someone in South Wales fitted a narrowed JAG IRS and a straight 6 Jag engine and auto box to one, I saw it a few times punishing the unaware in a straight line, but it didn't do bends, let alone corners, very well...

My first car was a A35 Van with the 1098cc engine, by the time I had fitted twin Amal carbs and ground the cyl head down its performance far out stripped the puny brakes and awful steering box. I remember passing a Renault Dauphine at about 85mph and the look of disbelief on his face made it all worthwhile. Cant agree on your preference as I think my Morris Minor was a better car.
