There's a hand-crank starter engineered and made in India (I think) with disc springs that are compressed via crank. When released they have enough stored power to crank over large stationary Diesel engines. Smaller and lighter than an inertial starter, but just as mush stored energy. It was the first application of this type of spring I've seen.
