Ok, the Germans are the hands-down winners at developing innovative weapons, This, however, was not their finest moment.
Mythbusters tested it; it works if you define "works" as altering the flight path of the bullet. If you define "works" as a practical weapon, forget it.

use two of them and you can shoot the guy behind you...or yourself and the gun recoils FORWARD.

I have several rifles with the same problem. If I want to hit something, the best thing to do is throw it.

With exception of Road Runner cartoons, it'll still recoil backwards!

Since I had said use two so it shoots behind you, you'll get a recoil back from accelerating the bullet until it hits the curved part, then you'll get a force pulling away from you as it turns 180 to head backwards. At this point I don't know which would be more, you'd still have expanding gas during the turn so in theory it would still be accelerating.

Probably feel like a springer air rifle, back when you pull the trigger from the inertia of the piston then forward jump when the piston bottoms.

How would you like to be the first guy that had to test it? That would be a little nerve wracking.
