Great idea, that would definitely make things easier on the back. Excellent documentation of the build, I agree with Frank about most build videos.
The only thing I might suggest would be some kind of counter weight if one needed to extend the boom for some reason.

Congratulations on the tool of the week award.
While it may be nearly impossible to lift a load off a pallet then remove the pallet, it will still be easy to transport the load and the pallet to another location. then remove the crane and pallet jack. I've seen more than a few high CG loads toppled off pallets while being transported on a pallet jack alone. Even those strapped securely to the pallets are often times a challenge to move safely.

This thing is great, and timely for me as I'm about to pull an engine. Unfortunately I found that Harbor Freight's "shop cranes" are a sham: They don't have them in stock, and you can't buy the floor models (even if you wanted to) unless you wait a year (according to a store manager).

Can anyone recommend an affordable but decent crane like the one depicted in this build? I was going to get the HN 2-ton one for some safety margin, although my sole project right now is lifting a Mustang engine.

Craigslist, OfferUp, Facebook Marketplace and local websites. Don't know your location, but odds are you could find several in span of a couple hours. Good chance some will be premier brands.

Thanks toolmaker51, page 1 isn't evident however my sanity is now restored.
I've had a few strange things happen with the HMT site in recent times and suspect some of the settings may have been altered, but not at my end. This has happened before and Jon has kindly fixed it, maybe he's been fine tuning again. Not sure why I seem to be the only one affected though.
