Cutting down a tree burning from the inside.

Is it better to let it burn standing up or cut it down and spread the fire over a larger area? How does this happen anyway? Lightning strike? Arborist arsonist?

Best guess would be a lightning strike.

With a fire crew on hand it is probably best to knock it down and put it out while they are there and can attend to it. Letting it burn upright runs the risk of letting the wind spread the sparks farther away. Sometimes it is best to just let a fire burn out but usually you try to get it out as soon as possible.

Lightning hit a tree about 50 ft from my house about 5 years ago. I didn't know at the time, but the tree caught fire and burnt the middle out. It survived. It's still alive and standing.
