It might be difficult to safely anesthetize a giraffe. They have high blood pressure to get blood up that neck to the brain. If they lower their heads to drink, restrictors in the neck arteries prevent the powerful heart from blowing out a cranial artery. Anesthesia might interfere with the operation of that mechanism and laying them flat in that condition might kill them.
