    Homemade Lathe Sanding Belt Holder

    Took me some time to decide to fabricate it, even construction is very simple and it's quite cheap to make. Spent less than 30 dollars to make it.



    Materials used:

    mild steel, thickness 10 and 12 mm
    316 st. steel, dia 28 mm / rollers
    4140 alloy steel, dia 20 mm / main shaft
    2 x 6201 zz bearings
    4 x 608 zz bearings
    2 expansion springs, wire dia 2 mm, length 65 mm
    aluminum 6061, dia 60 mm / drum
    various bolts and nuts

    Few years ago I saw these holders on the web, but those were outrageously expensive. Still expensive even there is no obvious reason for it.

    Idea is good indeed, but it's not my idea, not my invention. I only added flat platen and installed ratcheting mechanism instead of worm gear assembly or something similar in other models. Otherwise the belt would rotate free. Also made it in a way that belt can be rotated by drill machine or some other motor.

    I used cordless drill first, but it was too slow. Then I took a more powerful 720 watt drill and it's much better for this job. Didn't think about permanent motor installation, as it would make this attachment much bulkier and heaver. Wanted to make it as small as possible.

    ? Save mount weight and drive by a cable? But even not motorized is very, very good, to impart consistent finish across length by power feed.
    If motorized and running against spindle rotation it equals a crankshaft polishing machine, far more compact.
    Finally and as LMMasterMariner demonstrates, paper or plastic are superior to rags, when shielding bedways from grinding fines.
    I prefer oil-wetted paper, as the abrasive and metal stick for disposal.
