Same basic concept as the automatic auto-tie balers we use for our scrap paper... without the auto-tie and automatic parts (Balemaster type). The "rails" on the top and bottom narrow to final dimension so as you press the new in, it compresses tighter and tighter as it pushes through. The panel they insert allows them to push the wire through to tie it off for the one at the end and start the new. . New wires are pushed through for the next bale and these wires push through the slots in the sides as the material is pushed through. After it's tied off the next bale pushes the tied bale out the end and it expands a little into the tied wires making a nice compact bale.

That's not my dad operating the baler for sure because those bales don't even weigh 100#.
If you can't make it precise make it adjustable.

I just purchased a manual shavings compactor. A friend says he believes that they would use slats and wire rather than bags.Manual hay baler - GIF-comactor-back.jpgManual hay baler - GIF-compactor-back-right.jpgManual hay baler - GIF-compactor-front-left-door-closed.jpgManual hay baler - GIF-compactor-left-front.jpgManual hay baler - GIF-compactor-back-top.jpgManual hay baler - GIF-compactor-ratchet-rack.jpgManual hay baler - GIF-compactor-front-flap-open.jpgManual hay baler - GIF-compactor-rack.jpg
