Some dogs, and cats, will eat so fast that they make themselves vomit. A slow feeding bowl is supposed to help prevent that.

Never thought about the nervous breeds and the human created gulpers. It is my contention that many animals learn their behavior traits both good or bad as a direct result of how they are cared for and the environment in which they must exist. Many of these traits are also the indoctrinations of their human's influences strictly for the convenience of their human.
