I actually witnessed this in Fort McMurray about 15 years ago. I was driving to work at 4:30 in the morning and out on the horizon I could see the sun was coming up. Except it was a few hours too early. It was a continuous glow that really did look somewhat similar to the sun just beginning to rise. One of the cokers blew up at Suncor, and it basically made an artificial sun on the horizon. I was about a 45 minute highway drive away from the plant, to give an idea of how large the fireball was.
