The army had potato washing/peeling machines when I was in basic at Ft. Lewis. They took me off of it after they found I was making tiny potatoes from big potatoes. It was a machine with abrasive walls and an abrasive rotor in the bottom that had water running through it. After they took me off that, they had me peeling potatoes...they didn`t like it either when I made six cuts to peel them.

The mess sgt loved me peeling potatoes when I was on KP in basic as I had learned to peel them from my grandmother and mother. Someone had dropped a ceramic coffee cup that ad belonged to one of the cadre and broke it I latched on to the part with the handle and used the broken edge to hone the edge of the peeling knife I was using that knife was sharp enough to split a frogs hair 4 ways. You say you've never seen a frog's hair well let me tell you they are sub microscopic in diameter which is probably why you've neve seen one. I would take a spud hold it in one hand and rotate it using the knife to circular peel the spud starting with the end until about a quarter of the way flip the spud over and rotate it to peel the other end the same way then hold it by the ends and make 10 to 12 real quick thin slices so thin I was barely removing the peelings And I could peel 2 sometimes 3 to every one the other guys peeled

I got pretty lucky after my advance training. I was a combat medic and combat medics don`t pull KP. Yay!
