Removing metal wire pipe wrapping - GIF

Removing metal wire pipe wrapping. Not really sure what the wrapping/cladding material is called. Anyone?

Its called bar wrapping. This technique is employed to allow increased pressures in the piping. Often used on poly propylene, concrete, steel or stainless steel copper or just about any cylinder tubing where the pressures may exceed the normal bursting pressures. When employed the technique also affords the use of substantially thinner piping saving in material and production costs.
Another use of the bar wrapping is in systems with a high frequency pulsation rate or infrequent extreme pressure spikes, the high tensile wrapping medium aids in reducing metal fatigue

While I would never question your vast storehouse of knowledge and experience, Frank, this time I believe you are mistaken.
