I wonder why it's no longer used? Probably because continuously meshed bevel gears provide continuous torque transmission thru 90 degrees rather than this setup which looks "jerky" or rather intermittent.
Also - amount of power that can be transmitted, lubrication needs for the pins in the ball sockets, space/volume required, etc.
