Interesting build. I carry a small composition book; this one. It holds 4.5x3.25 notebook refills like these.
If you cut about 1/2" off of the front and back covers of the notebook refill, it will slide into the composition book such that a 1/2" gap is left between the spines of the notebook refill and the composition book. A small pen can clip into that space, and then the whole mess - composition book, notebook, and pen - lies flat in my front pocket.
The challenge is finding a good pen. It has to be 5" or less in length, strong clip, and not so expensive that I can't lose it every few months.
Zebra SL-F1 - falls apart.
Zebra Mini Ballpoint - flimsy clip.
Pilot G2 - too bulky.
The Parker Jotter is next up on my list, but after seeing this build, I think I'm going to put some thought into making a basic pen that would better satisfy my needs.
