    Thin-Walled Heat Glue Potting

A thin layer of heat glue serves as an excellent potting material in low-voltage applications that will not be exposed to high heat. Here is how I make very thin strips of heat glue that I use for potting items like wire splices, especially when I forget to slide on shrink tubing first.

Great idea, Rick. Could have used this just a week ago, splicing in a replacement 12v power supply with very short leads.

    Thanks!

Saved Rick. I also use hot glue under normal heat shrink to make water proof connections. Sometimes I don't have hot melt adhesive lined heat shrink in the correct size. That's my extension cord trick!

Hot glue can be used as splice insulation using a mold that encases the joint. These are available for purchase but can be machined from aluminium using a milling device. I have found that the mold can be safely gripped in a vice prior to injecting the hot glue as long as there is insulation to prevent the mold from cooling too fast.
