Wow, did anyone get hurt? Looks like a lot of running away and escaping going on. Scary moment.

Yup. Driving through fog with vehicles stopped on highway... probably, not a great idea. Trucker tried to avoid vehicles in front of him.

I guess the driver (loose term) was trying to keep to the all important schedule.

Very probably and now here in the USA with the mandatory ELD instead of the old paper log books. There is almost no flexibility in how the logs are done.
older drivers are having trouble with them because many were used to stopping when they felt tired grabbing a short rest then driving on still not driving for longer than their legal allotted amount of time per day /week / ETC but spreading their drive times out over sometimes longer periods to drive the same amount of hours.
The truck stop runners whole liked to stop at every old haunt they knew along their route never figured out if they kept their left door closed they could go further in a shorter amount of time and have more time to rest and sleep, are the ones who are really having problems with the ELD.
The poor guys who run on forced dispatch, with dispatchers who google the distance and times tables then think a driver should be able to drive those distances no matter what, are the guys who will wind up having more accidents than others.
The ATA and other organizations needs to step up and help lobby to have the ELD rules amended or at least some room for explanation of extenuating circumstances

We had a delivery last Christmas. He had to do over 200 deliveries in a day. Guess who he was working for? Personally, I would not order from them.
