If necessary, I can make my drill press wedge (qv) redundant with this arrangement. The jack take up the slack. The cranked pointer gives a reasonable level of accuracy, enough for my purposes, at any rate. Of course, I rotate the pointer by hand!

Great idea as that keeps the table square to the spindle in all positions. Definitely making one of those.

I have a scissors jack that I keep under the table on one of my drill presses for this same purpose.
If you can't make it precise make it adjustable.

Crusty I see a scissors jack raising and lowering the table but how would it indicate the level/alignment of the table?

Ralph, I have had to do this on one of my drill presses, using a trailer tongue jack. these smaller round column drill presses Mine had a 4 inch diameter column, do not have the strongest collars holding the table to the columns when you apply down pressure on the drill the table will flex downward. By adding a support such as a jack under them we can hold the table square to the column and drill head so the downward pressure into the table resembles that of a knee jack under a Bridgeport pattern mill. It helps immensely in drilling a deep straight hole through a part
Never try to tell me it can't be done

This works. I used a thick wire and lined it up on the outer edge of the table. Then I used a rubber mallet against the chuck were it was out of line. After a few minutes you can rotate the chuck and see that the pointer travels evenly around the table.
