Ralph, I have had to do this on one of my drill presses, using a trailer tongue jack. these smaller round column drill presses Mine had a 4 inch diameter column, do not have the strongest collars holding the table to the columns when you apply down pressure on the drill the table will flex downward. By adding a support such as a jack under them we can hold the table square to the column and drill head so the downward pressure into the table resembles that of a knee jack under a Bridgeport pattern mill.
