Turning saw

This is a saw frame I made in order to take advantage of broken bandsaw blades.

The blade clamps copy from small jewelers saws, with flat seats milled about halfway through the ends of long 1/2” carriage bolts that go through the handles. The 8-32 allen screws that tighten the clamps seem small but they hold great.

It seems common here on Homemade Tools, though!

I think the old jewelers saws with sliding frames were meant for using broken blades, so even if it’s not so adjustable using them on a turning saw isn’t much of a stretch.

This is kind of a cross between a rabbet plane, dovetail saw, sur-form and a “centipede plane”, using cut up discarded old carbon steel circular saw blades.

That's a neat design. Looks like it might be difficult to get it started in a straight line though...how well does it work in practice?

I couldn’t think of a very accurate name to call it here, 0.330” is a kind of odd width, but it works pretty well for making dados just using a straight edge since there’s no set on the teeth.

I use it a lot for roughing things to reference depths, like for hand planing or carving. It’s more aggressive and controllable than a rasp or plane. The land at the front end helps to prevent over feeding, and staggering the teeth helps control chattering and tearing out.


I couldn’t find this yesterday, it’s from Aldren Watson’s “Country Furniture” - I shaped my handle like a carriagemakers plane mostly to use a smaller piece of wood.
