    Universal Grinder Power Feed xy table power feed

    I finally got the time to put my power feed on my universal grinder. It will be used any time the x position needs to be changed. Manual feed from the opposite end is still useable but it considerably stiffer with the motor engaged. It only required 4 new pieces of aluminum to complete the project. It is now ready for power.

    Control Box For Universal Grinder Table Feed

    I have a few shots of the "portable" feed motor power supply. I will use this on the lathe feed screw(not done yet) and on the Universal Grinder power feed. The parts are the same as used on the Mini Mill power feed with the exception of the plastic box. The 15 vdc power supply brick is simply epoxied on to the box. The mill unit is mounted on the spindle housing in a more permanent position as I use it all the time. On the lathe and grinder I will not be using it all the time so I went for a portable method.

    Nice clean build JR. A thought for the hand wheel/motor coupling issue. Perhaps if you cut your coupler in 2 and milled a couple of flats for a small plate and thumb screws you could uncouple the gear motor with a drop latch of some kind...of course you would have to align it again to recouple. Just thoughts...

    I have seen a post of a motorized X table on a mill. They used a sliding socket to engage and disengage the motor, real simple.
    I'll have to see if I can the page again.

    I borrowed the idea from a u-tube video for a very nice sliding coupler and variable speed , two direction controller for my mill. Works great! Have a peek at his video and it may inspire you as well.

    It really is a great idea for engaging and disengaging the drive motor.

    There is also a thing called a dog clutch that works the same but much easier. Here is a link for one maybe it will give you some food for thought.

    My mill has a power feed with a friction clutch with cork gasket material glued to the worm gear - just turn the doorknob to engage or disengage it.
