My dad was one of the prize crew members (original) during WWII. He was a pharmacist mate. He never really talked about the war or his time on the Shangri-La. He even said he thought they had towed it out to sea and used it for target practice after the war. Wow, was he wrong. As I recall reading, it was used up until in 1990's. He had a certificate to receive one of the decking planks, but never redeemed it.
