Long ago, but about same timeframe there was electric railcar service Kansas City to St. Joseph, MO. St. Joe was larger than Kansas City, until they voted down a rail yard, propelling KC far ahead. The traffic was largely weekenders, business people with secondary homes 65 miles away. At 80 mph, is a quick trip, basically same route as I-29 is now.
