    The angle of the cross walk in the second photo also leaves a lot to be desired.

    Actually, it makes the most sense if you look at it closely the crosswalk also crosses a bridge at the same time and there are traffic lights not just the crosswalk lights. By cutting diagonally across the bridge as they are crossing the road, they are taking the shortest distance
