What did those rubber ribbed wheels come off and also why didn't you leave the wheel width the same and just use a wider belt? :
Some times i make new knives and i needed grinder for it so the wheel was too large for the standard belt ( This is such a standard tape 2 × 72 in America and 50 × 200 in Europe.)
I made this machine for standard belts which i can buy.
