From the looks of the saw its a common procedure...

There are a lot of companies who do nothing else but cut concrete. In floors, walls, ceilings and yes stairways. Most that I have done business with though will usually have the guards on the blades with water spraying on them. Blades are not cheap and water helps them to last 10 times longer.
