    I would have expected to see some sort of bright flash on the ground or surrounds if this was lightning.

    Could have been just far enough out of camera angle to see it

    The exact same thing just happened at my house three weeks ago. We had a very large poplar tree in our backyard, probably the most beautiful tree I've ever seen. It was easily my family's favorite tree.

    It got hit by a bolt of lightning and literally exploded all over the yard with the top section landing on top of our roof. Miraculously, there was no damage to my home, not even a broken window. The tree was less than 20ft from the back of our house, and right outside the large windows to our family room.

    Such a sad occasion to cut the remaining section of trunk down. Is it possible to miss a tree almost as much as a person?
