I really like idea of milling out a recess for altering engagement of the pinion/ altering handle positioning.

    Offering three additions.

1] Mounting an arbor press; when opening in base of casting projects beyond edge of bench allows longer parts, such as axles and bearings. This applies to mounting bench vises similarly, whereas solid jaw is directly over (in plane) with bench edge. When pulling to create a bend or straightening, that adds lots of rigidity.
2] Interchangeable arbor tooling; mill a flat on the shank to accept set screw with out marring. With that slot inclined somewhat to shank axis, makes a very solid retention of tool, equally resistant to slipping out.
3] One needed to complete myself soon; arbor stop clamp. Current version is a milled |_| ("U" shape), and tapped to receive threaded fasteners at open end. The cap has two unhardened dowels spaced to equal pitch of the gear rack. The U half carries a decently sized fine threaded stud to contact top of frame. Allow enough length for somewhat more than 1 pitch of gear rack (tooth to tooth distance).

18 months ago I made a post showing what I regarded as essential mods to a similar press.
Here it is Fixing a Harbor Freight style Arbour Press.
