I don't know about you but If I was in that black truck I'd have hung a quick U-turn and burnt rubber peeling away when I saw that tanker car fall over...

The guy in the white truck directly across was a heck of a lot closer to wearing it.

I am surprised the train stopped so quickly. Even going slow that is a lot of mass rolling down the track. There must not have been many cars behind the derailed ones.

They weren't as close as it appears in this view. The camera was set quite a distance away and zoomed in (makes for a better view). The guy who shot this had several cameras set up around a bridge on the other side of the copse of trees on the left. One was set up along the tracks, and it shows the crossing better.

They look to be in the same distance as I am when I wait for a train to go by at least twice a day at the crossing near my warehouse, right at the stop line twenty five feet from the tracks.

This wasn't a derailment, the tanker car fell off it's carriage.

Uhh… what? It is a derailment. The tank car rolled off of its trucks *because* it derailed. As the cars slid further off the tracks they tipped, as they do. Since the only thing that holds them on is gravity, they tend to fall off when the cars fall over. I happened to recognize the event because this is one of the YouTube railroading channels I’m subscribed to.

Skip to 14:55, and watch for the three light blue boxcars separated by a red oxide box and a black hopper. The about-to-fall tank is immediately behind the third blue car. The derailment starts by the bridge.

There is an easy test to check if a derailment has taken place. You look at all of the wheels. If any of the wheels are not on the rails, those wheels have derailed.

It is like being on an airplane. If you were on the plane, and then you are not on it any more, you deplaned at some point. If you were on a train, then you got off, you detrained.

Same thing with wheels and rails. The wheels used to be on the rails, now they are not.
