it's almost like they're harvesting something off the piles - not sure if oysters, or perhaps something else?

perhaps Mussels? kinda looks like the picture from: https://thefishsite.com/articles/cul...s-blue-mussels specifically the bottom of image: https://images.thefishsite.com/fish/...inline@maximum

but the stuff on the poles looks less defined than the other pictures of mussels I can find... maybe seagrass/algae over the mussels? or something else entirely?

There is a possibility they are harvesting barnacles for use in fertilizer. It is obvious the piles are used for some kind of sea farming operation. much like the PVC pipes they have in a tide pool in the Puget sound

I wonder how long it took to grow that much on the piles? They can sure foul a boat bottom quickly.

Not harsh is the product was going to become an ingredient in fertilizer, or washed and ground into a supplement to be added to chicken feed to aid them in making their egg shells

I think there are strict environmental regulations concerning disposing of barnacles when a boat is hauled out. Probably because of toxicity of the antifouling paint however.
