I'll offer a suggestion you might want to consider...

Think about supplying the table elevator lever with an adjustable counterweight arrangement. My experience with my own miniature drilling table lift indicates that a counterweight provides an even more sensitive feel.

I think that counterweighting is an essential part of making a drill (or table in Marv's case) sensitive. Here is my offering in that direction.
