    Setting two tools for facing and chamfering in one operation

    Hi All

    This is a short video on setting up two individual tool holders on the Dickinson tool post to face and chamfer in one operation on the lathe.
    Saves a tool change or reloading each component to chamfer after facing.

    I like it, anytime a form tool is in play, that's more productive. It also takes some skill to regulate settings so actual duplicates are generated, not fiddling them.

    I did this type of setup with HSS making 46 odd tool holder adjusting nuts back in 2003, for the tool holders I made.

    It strikes me that, with a bit of grinding wizardry, one should be able to produce a single HSS tool that would incorporate both facing and chamfering capabilities.

    I've already made a rhombus-shaped tip chamfering tool that has three chamfering surfaces. This allows me to use the two forward facing surfaces for left or right side chamfering and the side facing surface for chamfering the ID of holes - all without having to rotate the tool. The vertices on this tool are never used for cutting so it's not inconceivable that they could be reground to act as facing tools.

    This is the tools setup for cutting along the z-axis. A right hand lathe tool followed by the chamfer tool for sliding. For facing, I use the left hand tool as per the video. So as can be seen from the photo below, the length in this case has changed the chamfer size and the tool orientation.

    Hi Marv
    The nice thing about having the two individual tools is when different stock diameters are to be faced and chamfered the tooling positions can be easily be reset to accommodate this difference in size. This method also allows different size chamfers to be cut as the facing tool can travel past centre allowing the second tool to cut required chamfer dimensions. Another advantage is only one bed stop position is required in conjunction with the spindle backstop.
    However, I am always looking for improved methods and look forward to your ideas and improvements.
