Seems that if Linseed oil was applied every so often, that the life of wood shingles could exceed a century. I know Cedar shingles will exceed 60 years with no maintenance. But like all other issues, once a piece of shingle gets blown off, water gets in, and damages the support wood, which accelerates the destruction.
