back when I was pipelining and doing heavy equipment repairs it was Benard or nothing for me, one would last through a 1000 lbs of electrodes or more .
A simple 1/4 twist to the left opened it then the same to the right closed it Change rod sizes open it more or close it more would accept rods from 1/16" to 1/4" (1.5 to 6mm)
Also if it didn't have a rod in it you could toss it on the work piece and it wouldn't arc out made of industrial Bakelite with a copper nose shied for heat

Esab has twist-lock models too.
Personally i don't like them very much, because it tends to get loose too easily.

I think there should be some way to improve / make a diy version from these models too.

Mr.dk.diy's model really fixes loosening problem, but i think its possibly that if it touches the workpiece, its jaws welds together. That risk comes when its uninsulated and contains moving parts.
