If I went to the top of this thread I would have seen it all. Nice job and real creative, If it works, that is all that counts. What do you think of that Grizzly?

    Hi LMM
Is there a specific mechanical advantage in mounting the caliper assembly near the lathe chuck or is the mounting site for convenience.

The reason I ask, is that I too have a disk brake assembly ( about 6" ) from a small motor cycle. It was my intention to install it on the input side of the lathe on the pulley for the vee belt. I would be fitted with a micr switch activated power cut out .I have seen factory fitted footbrakes (drum variety ) mounted this way.

    Thanks Ozwelder

    Hello Nelson,

My lathe is little bit bigger than G0602, most probably made in one of the factories in China, which are making Grizzlies.
Not bad at all. Couple of differences compared to G0602. Lead screw is metric (20mm x 2mm acme thread).
Nylon gears are 44 and 66, not 40 and 60 like in G0602. Beside the size, all the rest is the same.
Made several modifications to that lathe and next project would be power cross feed.
I couldn't get bigger lathe to my workshop, as I have 120 steps to my house and workshop
    is 3 x 2 meters only.

    Regards
    LMMM

    Hello Ozwelder,

Backplate of my chuck is screwed onto the spindle and I didn't want chuck to get unscrewed and fly around when stopped suddenly.
That's the main reason why I put brake disc onto the chuck.
Check here: Lathe Spindle Nose and Backplate Fittings

Also due to recess in motor pulley it would be hard (but not impossible)
to install brake disc on the pulley.

    Regards
    LMMM

Congratulations LMMasterMariner - your Lathe Chuck Brake is the Homemade Tool of the Week!

Very clever use of a motorcycle foot brake, especially when sourced so inexpensively on the net. This is an example of a lathe modification that others will likely be incorporating. This is your 2nd Homemade Tool of the Week win; interestingly, both were lathe modifications.

Some nice picks this week: a Tractor Forklift Attachment by Imabass, a Wooden Clamp by Mikhandmaker, Chuck/Arbor Mating Shims by jjr2001, Bolt Tongs by Philip Davies, Gouges by Philip Davies, a Belt/Disc Grinder by HartWieStahl, a Screw Holding Device by mklotz, a Flashlight Bore Cleaning Rod by Frank S, and a Bandsaw Fence by wormil. We also saw two rarer similar tools, a Marlinspike by mklotz, and a Knot Pick by Frank S. In addition, we had a lot of productive discussion around tap/drill storage, exemplified by a Tap and Drill Bit Organizer by Vyacheslav.Nevolya, and a Tap and Drill Bit Storage System by olderdan.

LMMasterMariner - you'll be receiving a $25 online gift card, in your choice of Amazon, PayPal, or bitcoin. Please PM me your current email address and gift card choice and I'll get it sent over right away.

    = WARNING / Lathe Chuck Brake =
    ==========================

    Dear all,

Please note that chuck jaws are getting loose by every sudden stopping
if there is no work tightened in self centering scroll chuck.
If you do numerous starts / stops when checking how good is your brake,
there is great possibility that jaw(s) will fly out from the chuck.
Always observe lathe rule no. 1; NEVER STAND IN FRONT OF THE CHUCK.

    Regards
    LMMasterMariner
