The "not as beefy as dovetails" issue was in my mind when I modified the lathe but it has turned out to be a non-issue. I can take hefty interrupted cuts just as much as I could with dovetails.
I made a test cut in mild steel with BAP400R 50mm face mill going full width and 3 [mm] deep and whole knee - saddle - table assembly didn't complain. Normally I'm not going to push it hard. I prefer light climb milling cuts with high rpm and rapid feed (for carbide tooling).

After playing with morse taper for almost 4 years some intrusive thoughts appeared...

What I mean? Look at this:

    Milling machine - video-nt30.png

I'm able to buy matching cast iron cyliner for like 20 USD.

I wanted to rebuild mill head anyway (post #87 Milling machine - video).
This is what goes around my mind everyday...

You can get these in one of two forms. One uses a drawbar and the other type uses the quick release system for CNC auto tool changing. The second type is a great time saver.

Do you have any links to version with quick release system?

I thought about buying standard drawbar version and then modify electric impact wrench for power drawbar system.

I am traveling right now and it is a bit difficult to access my stuff. I'll be home in two weeks if you can wait that long.

Sure I will wait, I don't know yet when I will start building new milling head. I want to just collect as much data as possible, then make a 3D model, all technical drawings etc.

Subjects for nearest future are power feeds and coolant system.

I conducted experiment with drawbar and impact wrench. It works surprisingly well. So decision is simple - I stay with current spindle nad I'm going to rebuild machine head according to original plan. Of course for power drawbar system I would buy much smaller impact wrench - the one from video is overkill for this task.

I also installed LC filter between VFD and motor - high frequency noise from motor windings is gone

There were also improvements in power feed controls. Details will be shown in next video.

I am back from my travels and I managed to find the very clever system that I mentioned which is incredibly easy to use. Unfortunately for me, it is designed for a manually operated quill and my mill is CNC. It is designed for R8 spindles but I think that it could be applied to a morse taper. If you dig deep in the web site you will find enough detail to be able to reproduce the system.

If you search Google patents for "inventorMarc H. Boisvert)" it will throw up all the patents describing the system.

I used my mill for couple days and there is a problem with motor-filter-vfd setup.

My vfd throws overcurrent error when I'm pushing hard on the motor (big drill for example) or when I set carrier frequency below 8 khz - during acceleration/deceleration. It never happened before installing the filter.

Motor is 3 phase 1,5kW, 380V, 1420 rpm, 3,4Amps (parameters from motor nameplate). VFD is for 1,5kw motor, and it can take 3,8 Amps. Filter is rated for 5 Amps.

I connected wires from VFD to UVW input on filter, ABC output goes as phase wires to motor and N is connected to this plate (marked in red circle)

Do you have any ideas what can be wrong?

I think too small VFD would throw overcurrent errors even without filter.
