A Quick and Dirty Light Duty Carriage Bolt Wrench

Sometimes I need a tool that I’ve never seen in any store. Being able to temporarily assemble such a tool from materials and tools on hand is useful. Even if you don’t need this particular tool, I hope it inspires you to fabricate custom tools.

Hear, hear. Being able to visualize a combination of readily available material that will solve the problem to hand is an essential talent for creative people to cultivate. It's also the main argument for keeping a mountainous collection of "stuff" in the workshop. :-)

Another of your clever ideas to file in the memory bank
Thanks I have normally used needle nosed vice grips to grip on the square The problem with vice grips on square shoulders is the contact area is not always the greatest
Never try to tell me it can't be done

And to think, I almost didn’t write this up because I figured everyone would already do things like this. As usual, I am least qualified to judge my own work.

I've had the same thought about some of the simplistic things I submitted.

Nevertheless, these simple things provide examples to expand and encourage the creativity of others. Folks who think one needs to buy a tool to fix every problem are shown that stuff lying around the house can be reassembled to solve simple problems. They also learn that one doesn't always need paper plans to make what is needed.

And yes, none of us is best suited to judge his own work. Count the "thanks"; it's the best indicator.

A clever idea and a good use of stuff on hand.

A small twist on the theme might be to wrap the stack of stuff with rubber bands enough to allow it to not fall apart each time you change bolts but not too tight to manipulate easily. Then for working pressure you could just use the bench vise

Congratulations rgsparber - your Carriage Bolt Wrench is the Homemade Tool of the Week!

Simple wins it this week. This tool's transient and rudimentary nature make it no less useful than one made with exotic woods and polished brass.
