It would be very helpful to add information about the cost of materials to the description, and inclusion of a BOM would be great.

Good point Leprechaun; adding a BOM in the description has been mentioned before, I think we might make that the standard. Estimated cost is wise too; people can save a lot of money by building tools like this. We can add up the materials cost beforehand, and then compare them to the cost of purchasing a ready-built tool. People will be able to see an exact dollar amount that they can save by building this tool. For this Rotary Phase Converter, the savings from building from plans as opposed to buying are probably in the hundreds of dollars.

We've only had these plans for sale for a week, but many people have shown interest. Last week Paul Alciatore broke our first week sales record with his highly-detailed Quick Change Tool Post plans. Now nhengineer has gone and done the same thing with these Rotary Phase Converter plans.

It looks like a lot of people are going to be saving money on a rotary phase converter build, because in just one week, 20 copies of these plans have been sold. :clapping:

I thought of including prices when I was creating the booklet but decided not to. Prices change with time and economic situations. In order to keep my booklet accurate, I would need to update it monthly. In addition, all of my designs are junkyard and salvage yard friendly.

If one were to purchase a 7½ HP 3-phace motor new, it would cost more than $1,000. I got the one shown in the booklet for $10. It would be misleading to publish either price as the gold standard.

I got the pony motor for free when my FHA furnace crapped out and I had to get a replacement. The pony motor started its life as a hot air blower motor.

All the steel used in the design was surplus from other projects. My cost for the converter was in the neighborhood of $50 including fasteners and shop electricity & heat.

I'm in Australia and I downloaded David's converter plans, unaware that in the States you have what is called high single phase.
Now my comprehension of that, from an Aussie point of view, is that you actually have two 120 volt phases and neutral return giving you 220 volts across the two phases.
In Australia we have 220volt single phase BUT it's only one hot line and one neutral return and the neutral is bonded to earth.

I've been in discussion with David over this and he was not aware of this situation, when this was made clear, he agreed that his design would not work in areas with this configuration of grid supply, and suggested that I post this information on the forum as a "heads up" to others contemplating building this design.

It's a bit of a sod that this exists because I've got several three phase bits of equipment and only a single phase supply (we recently moved house).

in australia you have 55 cycles in the us we have 60 cycles it may not be that difficult to convert and still use the same plans.

The issue is not frequency, it's phases; your "high single phase" is actually two 120volt phases in series, we only have ONE phase at 220 volts.
ie. On single phase in America you can split the high single phase into two separate 120volt phases giving you the ability to energize L1 and L2 in the three phase idler motor at 120volts each. WE CANNOT DO THAT, our grid is one hot line and one neutral return for 220volts, giving us the ability to only energize ONE phase.

Here is a new 7 1/2 3 phase motor for $ 550.00 .I buy motors for much less then $ 550.00 at the local salvage yard ( junk yard ). Never paid more then $ 50.00

I like seeing feedback (especially criticism) of any of the plans, or any part of the site. However, commenting that a product for sale online is also available elsewhere for free or at a lower cost (as G.Paul has now done twice) is a known competitive marketing tactic, that you may have even seen in customer reviews on Amazon or other online stores. I'd love to see the free plans he's mentioned, but it's increasingly looking like I'll have to separate out his posts and move them into another discussion.

I think that one of the reason that these plan are so popular is that the cost savings to the purchaser is substantial.

As an example, some years ago I bought a 21 quart canner from the states, I paid $30 for it,....it cost me $130 to get it here.

Whilst I'm online, and posting, I have a question for David, if you would be so kind as to provide the info.
Given that modern generators often use "capacitor control" (rather than an AVR) and that it has been shown that an ordinary synchronous motor will generate provided that it is driven slightly faster than the plate speed and a suitable capacitor is included in the circuit: is it possible to achieve the same result with a 3 phase motor, and what would the circuit schematic look like ( bearing in mind our Assie grid configuration, the motor would be wired star or delta with single windings on each leg at 240 volts)?

Hey Rob,

I've seen somewhere a circuit diagram which seems to be similar to what you have described.... I think. I'll need some translation from Aussi into American English though before I search my files. What is term "the plate speed" ? I once got into a debate with a gentleman from GB who insisted that he used a 'spanner' in what I thought was a totally improper application. Turns out, his 'Spanner' and my spanner were completely different animals.

Thanks for the prompt reply,and with it my apologies for the presumption in terminology. In Australia the plate speed of a motor is the speed designated on the identification plate on the side of the motor ( the plate that nominates voltage, amps, phase, temp range, frame spec, etc), so plate speed for most motors, unless they were "specials" would be, at 50 cycles, 960 (six pole) 1440 (four pole), 2800 (two pole).

Yup, after I sent the message I figured you were talking about what we call "nameplate" here in the northwest quadrant of mother earth. It is now 6:00PM and I have eye surgery on the morrow so it may be a bit before I can begin my search. I'm wondering if I maybe should just do a Google and save myself a bit of effort. I am curious to know if the plans are scalable. I have a 5' x 10' CNC router table that needs around 30A of 208VAC three phase and the accompanying vacuum pump is another 10HP....

The short answer is 'yes' Lintelle. The pony motor doesn't care and the idler (3-phaes generator [kind of]) must be 1.33 times the total final load. The idler's associated fusing must be no more than 1.25 times the total load. The wiring must be capable of the total running under load ampere requirement. If you'll post the total HP and application 3-phase voltage (208 I guess), I'll research what you'll need but you will need to have a local, licensed electrician give my numbers his blessing.

Are you working with 208 or is the machine tool 208
If you have in shop 208 that is three phase at you door step

The question is (If you have three why would you need converter?)
To me it simple just change a meter ring to 4 pole and skip the converter Their may be some else that I do not know at this time

Just thought I should add t this discussion: The same problem experienced by Rob would most likely also apply to New Zealand and South Africa, among others, as former British colonies. We inherited the British system and hence the 220V single phase supply.

Rotary type will work on 220 v 50 hz
FYI in 2000's they change the voltage to 240v still 50hz see http://ewh.ieee.org/r10/nsw/subpages...e-Voltages.pdf

Ah so, this situation is not unique to Australia then. That means my design will not work for any former British Crown Colony location and GB itself. I'll see if I can find a work around.
