The rare earth magnets are also susceptible to corrosion and are usually plated for protection. If the sealing is penetrated then the magnet will just crumble away.

tony,
You're clearly a very clever possum, but one thing concerns me about the tread mill motor mods,....What does it do for cooling now that you've closed all it's windows?
Interesting post. It isn’t uncommon in industry to take a standard motor and replace the shaft (easy on an induction motor), this idea goes a bit further. Hopefully it will inspire people to come up with their own solutions.
On the issue of a magnet demagnitizing due to heat, that was a huge concern early in my career. Magnets hAve come a long way in the last four decades. If you are concerned it is best to reference the manufactures data for the motor in question. This especially if you are salvaging a high performance motor out of mystery machinery. The simple reality is that there are more advance magnets available these days with higher temp characteristics.
One more thing, somebody mentioned above the dangers associated with installing the rotor in a permanent magnet stator. Yes it is hazardous and even a very small motor can bite badly. Take care! Not only do you risk finger or worse damage, those magnets can easily damage the rotor windings.
Interesting, I've been researching propellant making methods and stripped treadmills are commonly used for ball milling the constituents together, more reliable motors would suit that use, not that I'm going to be doing that as I can buy my propellant ready made, a much safer option.
