The tread on the tracks would be orientated much like Ag tires on tractors back in the 60's some farmers would turn their drive tires around for differing types of soils for sandy loose soils they had them turned 1 way but for muddy clay soils they turned them the other way It was thought that by doing this their traction was improved and helped to keep them from sinking into the soils with the wider larger diameter tires of today no-one does that any more
