Hello Hoosiersmoker:
While is looks very dark at the back, and was probability poorly lit by today's standards, this was surely a photograph done with a flash bulb. The effective light from a flash bulb is only a few meters and the camera would be set for the closest subject, the first lady at the table. The available light is reduced by the square of the distance, so the back hardly reflects anything.

Hello Marv:
I should of stopped at "flash" photos that were used starting in 1859. Flash bulbs and strobe didn't come in to use until about 1930. For a stunt in 1970 I staged an old time photo shoot with a flash troth powered by a busted flash bulb and some black power from by Grandfather's cellar. The lighting effect is the same for all types of flash.
