You would think a light bulb factory would be well lit!? It looks like a cave in there!

While is looks very dark at the back, and was probability poorly lit by today's standards, this was surely a photograph done with a flash bulb. The effective light from a flash bulb is only a few meters and the camera would be set for the closest subject, the first lady at the table. The available light is reduced by the square of the distance, so the back hardly reflects anything.

Flash bulbs in 1900 (?); I don't think so. Flash lamp possibly although it originated in Germany; don't know when it reached here.

Hello Marv:

I should of stopped at "flash" photos that were used starting in 1859. Flash bulbs and strobe didn't come in to use until about 1930. For a stunt in 1970 I staged an old time photo shoot with a flash troth powered by a busted flash bulb and some black power from by Grandfather's cellar. The lighting effect is the same for all types of flash.

One of the men in this photo is different from the others...

They all appear different from each other to me.

The one on the right does stand out with the shiny shoes, dapper coat and hat. He must be the boss and wanted to be in the photo. Seems he is pretending to work, but I do not believe the line shaft is running. The long exposure times of those old photos would cause the spokes in the pulleys and teeth in the gears to be blurred.

This picture "Glazier Stove Company" is probably meant for the boss who pretends to be working and oblivious to the camera in his suit, tie, and hat. Everyone else has a grim look.
