Another fantastic post from Rick. This makes me wonder about the possibility of blow molding softened PVC. Basically use an outside form instead of an inside.

For storage large plastic cable-channel also works great, just cut it into sections, glue pieces of the lid to the rear of the u-shaped channel piece and use some wood plate(particle-board, old floor laminate(amazing material, and cheap) to make fronts...

Using a piece of plate in both ends of the channel section allows you to retain the lid and make sliding lid stackable boxes..

I had some PVC rain gutter and tried reforming it into a square U shape. Worked nicely!

    Thanks,

I have added a warning at the top of the article. Thanks to nova_robotics and clinton1 for bring this to my attention. I can see that if someone was to use a torch, this could get dangerous very quickly.

    Yup, that's the stuff.

Comes in several different large dimensions from large and square to very wide and shallow, which makes it a lot easier to find a dimension that suits one's particular use.

PVC and a heat gun - I have modified PVC pipe* for various projects using this technique - and yes, you do need to be careful of fumes produced during the process. I try to do this outside with a fan blowing the fumes away. I am sure the boxes are strong but most of my applications don't require a HD box, so I just buy storage containers from D-Tree 2-3 for $1. Sorry $1.25 now.

*I modify PVC pipe to make fittings for shop-type vacuums for tools and dust collection purposes. With heat you can adjust the diameter of pipe (+ or -) to conform to your tools or connecting hoses, as required.
